Rennie Haylock started Huntr in 2017 as a job tracker and has spent nearly a decade turning it into an AI-native career platform – all without a single dollar of venture funding. That independence has let Huntr reinvent itself more than once: first as a globally loved job tracker, then as a B2B business selling to coding bootcamps, and now as a consumer suite built around an AI resume builder, a resume quality scoring engine, and job-tailored resumes.
Rennie’s background cuts across product design, technical product management, and growth – a range that comes in handy when you’re leading product and strategy for a lean team. Based in Seattle, he now serves hundreds of thousands of job seekers worldwide.
Huntr is a self-serve MongoDB customer, and we sat down with Rennie to learn more about his journey. Read on below!
What inspired you to start your company?
Back in 2017, job searching looked like a chaos of browser tabs and spreadsheets. People were running one of the most important projects of their lives (finding work) with no real system for it. Huntr started as the answer: a clean way to track every application in one place. But a deeper gap kept pulling at me. Careers are living records of personal progression, and most modern tools ignore this. The thought was: if you structure someone’s career data properly, everything downstream (resumes, tailoring, matching) gets dramatically better. That’s what we’re striving towards today with the power of LLMs.
What does your product do, and how does it work under the hood?
Huntr is an AI-powered career platform. At its core is a structured career profile that captures your full work history (roles, achievements, skills) as living data rather than a flat resume. From that, we help job seekers understand gaps between their resume and the jobs they’re interested in. We go a step further by integrating AI to help close those gaps and generate fully tailored resumes and cover letters for every job. Under the hood, a job description is semantically matched against your background, so tailoring surfaces the experience that genuinely fits, rather than keyword stuffing. MongoDB Atlas is Huntr’s backbone. MongoDB’s document model stores evolving career profiles, and Atlas Vector Search powers the semantic matching behind our Job Tailoring feature.
What milestone or moment has been most meaningful so far?
Our most meaningful milestone wasn’t a launch; it was user proof points. When we dug into our own platform data, we found that people who tailored their resumes to the role converted to interviews at roughly twice the rate of those who didn’t, across tens of thousands of real job searches. That confirmed the whole thesis: structured career data plus genuine tailoring actually changes outcomes. After years of building, watching real users land interviews because the product did its job is what keeps us going.
One piece of advice for founders today?
In the age of AI, focus has never mattered more. Everything feels crazy fast, and the tools tempt you to do all of it at once (support, sales, growth, SEO, engineering, design). But the way I see it, if AI takes your output from 1x to 10x, you can spread that across 9 buckets at 1x effort each, or point all of it at the one or two things that truly move your company. Shotgun versus laser. Both are now more powerful, but the laser builds something nobody can match, and it’s the difference between deep work and burnout.
Where do you do your best thinking?
I live in Seattle, and my clearest thinking happens away from the screen; out on a walk. Green Lake, Discovery Park, and the Ballard Locks are my usual loops. Something about moving and being near water untangles a problem better than sitting and staring at it ever does.
